Measles

Did you know that measles is experiencing a resurgence? Despite being eradicated from the US in 2000, cases are on the rise. In 2023, there were 58 reported cases, but by May 2024, the number had already climbed to 138. Internationally, measles cases are also increasing. Measles is highly contagious, with nine out of ten unvaccinated individuals exposed likely to become ill. The virus can linger in the air for up to 2 hours. While the measles vaccine is highly effective, vaccination rates in the US are dropping below the critical 95% threshold required for herd immunity. What can you do? Ensure your child is fully vaccinated, with one dose at age one and a second at age four. If you're planning international travel, the CDC advises that babies aged 6 months and older receive a dose of the MMR vaccine.
